When I was younger, I annoyed, distressed, and angered my parents. I was the typical "rock n roll" kid. Decades later, I annoy, distress, and anger my college students.
Today, the great news is, unlike my parents, my students can't throw me out of the house! Even better...I can throw my students out of class! (But I never do.)
I grew up outside of Buffalo, NY, where the Weather Channel describes as "the favored Snow Belt area." I lived for 10 years in the city of Buffalo, another 9 years outside of Syracuse. I blame that part of the country for developing my strange sense of humor, my ability to eat hot & spicy food, my growing daily "fix" for Starbucks' venti caffe Americanos with an EXTRA shot of espresso (that's 5 shots for the unknowing), and my skewed view on life (there's something about hearing "pistol packin' punks pulverize Paderewski patrons" repeatedly on TV news during my formative years...thanks WKBW!).
I miss Buffalo a lot. I have fond memories of Merlin's, No Name, Cole's, the Towne at 4 AM...the Original Locker Room on Allen Street. Nietzsche's. The Palm on Hertel. Rude Boys on Hertel. Shooters & Garcia's downtown. Renting a summer house near Capt. Kidd's on Lake Erie. The Albright Knox art gallery, where I fell in love with Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and the Mirrored Room. Jazz at the Albright; Shakespeare in Delware Park. Dozens of great friends. Crappy, low wage jobs. The "real" Vernors soda. Chinese food at King Wah in Ft. Erie. It's all good...
For the past 14 years I've been a university professor in southern NJ at Rowan University. Proudly one of America's ugliest college campuses.
